Well I actually don't like the show. I find the judges and all the fake sentimentality rather irritating. However, I do like to tune in to watch the acts sometimes and well, you could have pushed me over with a feather - they have someone genuinely amazing on this year!!!

Seriously, Diana Vickers - OMG!! What a performance! She's only 17 and has only sung at school and stuff before, but she did this on the first live show...

So beautiful. *sob*

I caught the show where she auditioned & thought she was great then. I recorded last night's show & whizzed through to her bit - I love that song & I thought she sung it brilliantly! I also love her image.

I hadn't watched the previous eps much so this was the first time I'd seen her (have watched her other performances on youtube now though). I have never been so impressed upon by an X Factor performance before, she was amazing.

And yes, I totally adore her image too. White dress, bare feet, and I love how she dances with her hands - beautiful.

Personally I'm not a fan of hers, though I can see where she'd have a niche in the market because she's got the different kind of voice and image.

The bare feet just remind me of Joss Stone and I find the way she sings irritating, but it seems she has potential and I'm guessing she's going to go far in this comp. I will admit she's one of the best singers this year.

Hehe, well didn't Simon say she's the sort you either love or hate? I just adore her style and voice.

Do you have a favourite? I also liked the boyband a lot (can't remember their name), normally the groups aren't very good but I thought they sang really well.

JLS I liked, I think they could go far. One of the better bands they've had on X. Didn't like either GirlBand or Bad Lashes.

Alexandra is my favourite at the moment. I thought she did fabulously. The young girls are by far the most strongest group this year. I liked the other young girl as well (Can't remember here name) but Alexandra is my fav for now.

My mind changes all the time though when I watch these shows. Like last year I couldn't stand Ridian at first and then I ended up loving him. Ya never know, by the end of this series I'll probably want Diana to win!

No I didn't like the girlbands either. I thought the last songs they did to try and stay in the competition were particularily bad! Def agree that Cheryl's girls are the best though.

And I don't think I greatly liked anyone last yr!

I haven't watched at all this year, until the repeat of last night's show today (round in-laws so had to watch). I have to admit that none of the acts stood out for me at all.
You're right about her voice...you either love it or hate it. My sister-in-law loves her and I have to say that she was the best of what I'd seen...definately the most distinctive voice.
I have missed all of the background stories of everyone, which is probably a good thing as I think you can let that influence you sometimes, rather than just going on the voice itself.
Can't say as I'm that bothered about tuning in again though.

Guh, I don't like all the background story bit anyhow. They just totally overdo it - everyone has to have a sad story and preferably cry whilst cheesy music is being played in the background. *groan* I usually fast forward if it's recorded or change channel if it isn't!

I did like quite a few of the acts this yr though and I normally don't!

Hehe, and love your icon. [livejournal.com profile] rospberry has one like that too!

I saw a couple of the first lot of audition rounds but that's all. There are some very odd, very deluded people out there... !

Yeah, there always is! I didn't see many of the auditions, but I remember being quite amazed at how downright scary (and awful) this woman was -

LMAO! What a fruit'n'nut bar!

Hehe, indeed! I'd have been well scared if I was one of those judges. Bloody nuts!

Hmmm, I seem to be feeling rather cranky... :¬}

I really do like her. :¬) However, *some* of the singing on offer last night was atrocious - so many flat notes and terrible harmonies. Okay, so it was the first show, but last year's winner Leon was *also* bloomin' awful too; he hit so many bum notes I was cringing. I don't think the girl band who were voted off should've gone, either - the one who stayed were *appalling*. :¬}

I had to mute the sound a lot, too - the way judges aren't ever allowed to voice even the *teensiest* amount of criticism without the audience (mostly family and friends, so not exactly unbiased) reacting like arseholes is ridiculous: these acts are going to face criticism in the real world, so they'd better get used to it. What the hell is the point if no-one can say anything *negative* about these people?!
From: [identity profile] silvershe-wolf.livejournal.com
Yeah, there were some awful ones, but there often is! And as for Leon, I wasn't keen on him either but then I don't remember particularly liking anyone last yr.

Lol, and I'm afraid I didn't like either of the girlbands!

And yeah, the acts do need constructive criticism. I do sometimes think though that the judges comments aren't always very constructive. There is a lot of mudslinging going on between the judges and a lot of emotive comments being said, when what the artists really need is useful and intelligent advice on how to improve!

I don't watch the X Factor so I hadn't seen this girl. I'd like to see a bit more of her before making a definite judgement, though her singing does appeal.

What did the judges say about her?

Date: 2008-10-12 08:59 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] silvershe-wolf.livejournal.com
Well if you're interested, here's another of her performances:

And the judges said mainly very positive things. Louis said she was very contemporary and 'the one to beat', of course Cheryl loved her cause she was her choice, Dannii liked her but said she overdid the hands (though I disagree) and Simon said she was 'the musical version of Marmite' i.e. you either love or hate her, and he loved her.

Weird fact: I think Marmite is 'okay'.

Thanks for posting this hun, I've only just got round to watching it. Yes, I like her, she has a kind of earthy/raw voice that is nicely individual, which I always like.

And she's a Lancashire lass so she's bound to be good!

I also watched the other vid of that very scary woman - phew, you don't want to be messing with people like her!

Her voice reminds me of the woman from the Cranberries, which is saying something, even if you don't like them much!

It's good when something catches your eye from these things. As you say, they are usually one big schmaltz fest.

*thinks fondly of George Samson*

Indeed! I'm usually not keen on talent shows - the only exceptions being Strictly and 'Any Dream Will Do' (which I LOVED!) Most of them are overdone though and the performances are samey, so it's nice to finally feel differently!

And I haven't seen little George since! Has he been on anything??

OMG yes! I haven't watched this show at all this year - generally only ever see about one ep per season lol - but I caught the repeat show last Sunday and this lass was singing Hallelujah and I actually stopped and sat down to watch her. Then again, she is a style of singer I love.

Date: 2008-10-12 09:52 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] silvershe-wolf.livejournal.com
Another fan! YAY! Seriously, I was watching the repeat last night like - boring, boring, predictable, ok...

OMG!!!

And you know I don't think I've seen a singer with her kind of style before. I tend to mainly listen to chart music and there's nothing like her within the realms of pop.

Except...maybe Duffy. Not that similar, but they both have rather distinctive voices, and a pretty cool style.

She reminds me somewhat of Alanis Morrissette crossed with Sandi Thom. Or Fiona Apple or Heather Nova.

Heather Nova song (tried to find a clip of her singing it, but I could only find it put to fan vids):

That's a gorge song!

I'll check out all of those artists. A few weeks ago actually I was saying to a friend of mine I'd like to hear some more, I don't know, 'soulful' music. Something with real feeling in and so she lent me some Alanis Morrissette albums as well as Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, and err, someone else I think. I've only properly listened to Sarah McLachlan so far (as I loved her stuff straight away) though maybe they all could be considered a similar sort of style.

WHOA!!! That sounds like something I would want to have on my iPod.

Seriously, she's fab!

And err is that Cheryl Cole in the judging panel?! WTF? Well I guess she'd be there anyway because she needs to make extra money huh.

Glad you like it too :o)

And yep - Cheryl is the new X Factor judge! She is Diana Vickers' mentor actually. So far, she's actually come over pretty well, but I do quite like Girls Aloud!

I've never watched the Xfactor ( very sad of me I know) but i've heard people talk about it before now, I have to agree thought that this girl appears to have more than a shread of talent - I've proberly completly put the kiss of death on her know - sorry!

I don't blame you for not watching X Factor! I don't like how the shows are done, I only tune in once in a while to see if they actually have any good acts (which they normally don't). Am uber impressed to finally see someone really good though!
