I think it is very disempowering how women are encouraged to focus upon our appearance all the time. Nearly all magazines/adverts/ television programmes etc aimed at women seem solely concerned with image. In fact this issue seems to dominate all of Western culture, and I know myself I have suffered the inevitable 'not good enough' feeling that accompanies this.

I really think, therefore, that it is the responsibility of every woman to try and break free of this preoccupation. That is not to say we should not care about how we look, but we should not let it define who we are. The feminine nature is so deep and divine. The feminine is passionate, compassionate, spiritual, creative, intuitive and wild as a she-wolf. But - we have to claim these gifts. Developing your true nature, your true gifts takes focus and time. So, alter your focus from without - to within. There is where your power lies.

I do agree with you, but I think the women who really do the work on their entire selves are the ones who already know who they are (or at least have a good idea.) If a woman is insecure about what she has to offer the world and live for male attention and approval, naturally superficial appearance is paramount.

True freudian_slip, and such a shame! It does seem that insecurity often leads to an obsession with appearance, but an obsession with appearance will inevitably create more insecurity!
However I believe it is always possible to escape such webs, no matter how embedded. But first we need to recognise them for what they really are.

I totally agree!! It's ridiculous that we're made to feel not good enough when the outside is not what counts, it's the inside that counts...

Indeed mrstilney! Not feeling good enough is such a plague amongst women - it distracts us from seeing and developing who we truly are!
